Mistral Large 2: The European Challenger Closes the Gap on Frontier Models
Paris-based Mistral AI releases its most capable model yet, outperforming Llama 3.1 70B on coding benchmarks and offering a credible European alternative to US-dominated AI infrastructure.
Mistral AI has consistently punched above its weight since the Paris startup's founding in 2023, and Mistral Large 2 — released in July 2024, coincidentally just one day after Meta's Llama 3.1 — continued that trajectory. With 123 billion parameters, the model scores 84% on MMLU and achieves particularly strong results on coding tasks, outperforming Llama 3.1 70B on HumanEval and showing competitive performance against GPT-4o on multilingual benchmarks. The timing of the release — positioned explicitly alongside Meta's launch — was widely read as Mistral asserting itself as the European standard-bearer in the race for capable, accessible AI.
The geopolitical dimension of Mistral's positioning has grown more significant as European policymakers look for alternatives to US-based AI infrastructure amid ongoing concerns about data sovereignty and the AI Act's compliance requirements. Mistral has cultivated relationships with French government institutions and European enterprises who prefer a provider subject to EU jurisdiction. The company's partnership with Microsoft Azure adds reach while Mistral maintains the ability to distribute model weights under its own license terms — a hybrid model that gives it more commercial flexibility than fully open competitors while preserving enterprise appeal through commercial API offerings.
Mistral Large 2 also represents a refinement of the company's core technical approach: efficient architecture design that extracts maximum capability per parameter count. The 123B model delivers results that would typically require a larger model from competitors, reflecting Mistral's emphasis on training efficiency and careful dataset curation over raw compute scale. With a valuation that crossed €6 billion following its June 2024 Series B and backing from Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Lightspeed, Mistral has the resources to sustain frontier-scale development. The question is whether a European champion can maintain relevance as the hyperscalers accelerate their own model development with compute budgets many orders of magnitude larger.
